CLINICAL DEVELOPMENT

Make Breath The First Test

An ambition to explore the potential of breath-based molecular sensing in healthcare.

A future in which a simple, non-invasive breath sample could provide valuable molecular information, helping clinicians identify when further investigation may be appropriate.

BreathInsight is exploring how NanoSense’s proprietary molecular sensing platform could contribute to this vision.

EXHALED BREATH

MOLECULAR INFORMATION

From Ancient Observation to Modern Molecular Science

The relationship between breath and health has intrigued physicians for centuries.

In the eighteenth century, Lavoisier demonstrated the presence of carbon dioxide in exhaled breath. Subsequent research established how substances move between the blood and lungs.

During the twentieth century, advances in gas chromatography and mass spectrometry enabled researchers to investigate volatile compounds in breath. Work by Linus Pauling and later Michael Phillips helped establish the scientific foundations for investigating breath compounds as potential disease biomarkers.

Today, research into volatile organic compounds (VOCs) continues to explore their relationships with physiological processes and disease.

THE NANOSENSE OPPORTUNITY

BreathInsight is an investigational healthcare application exploring the use of NanoSense molecular sensing technology to detect selected compounds in exhaled breath.

The longer-term objective is to investigate whether such molecular information could support earlier, more accessible clinical assessment.

It is not an approved or validated diagnostic test.

A PROPOSED CLINICAL PATHWAY

The intended approach would involve collecting a breath sample, analysing selected molecular targets and investigating whether the resulting information could help guide further clinical assessment.

This pathway requires analytical and clinical validation. BreathInsight is not currently presented as a validated diagnostic test.

Building The Evidence

Development is expected to progress through analytical research, clinical investigation, assessment of clinical utility and appropriate regulatory processes.

The intended clinical applications and performance requirements will be determined through the research and validation programme.

Experimental Sensor Response – Laboratory Testing

Laboratory testing explores how the NanoSense sensing platform responds under controlled experimental conditions. This is an experimental laboratory result only and does not represent clinical validation or disease detection.
