TECHNOLOGY & VALIDATION

Evidence before application

NanoSense develops patented nano-optical sensing technology designed to detect selected molecular compounds in real time — in compact systems engineered for use outside the laboratory.

INDEPENDENT VERIFICATION

Independent NPL / TBP Testing.

Controlled TBP Testing with Independent NPL Confirmation.

The sensor system was operated in the test chamber under ambient-air conditions for approximately one hour. The first 10 minutes, beginning at 11:37, were used to establish the sensor baseline. All eight displayed sensor channels then maintained a steady background.

CONTROL / AMBIENT AIR

The sensor system was operated under ambient-air conditions for approximately one hour. The first 10 minutes, beginning at 11:37, were used to establish the sensor baseline.

TBP EXPOSURE

The first TBP introduction was made at 13:00, followed by further introductions at 13:06 and 13:11 from the same substrate.

All eight displayed sensor channels showed an immediate response to TBP.

INDEPENDENT NPL CONFIRMATION

NPL simultaneously collected independent chamber samples during the TBP exposure test. Sampling ran from 12:57 to 13:54.

NPL analysis confirmed the presence of TBP in all four valid exposed samples.

CONTROL / AMBIENT AIR

Establishing the Sensor Baseline

The sensor system was operated in the test chamber under ambient-air conditions for approximately one hour. The first 10 minutes, beginning at 11:37, were used to establish the sensor baseline.

All eight displayed sensor channels then maintained a steady background, with no response to species present in the test chamber.

All eight displayed sensor channels maintained a steady background during the control period.

INDEPENDENT CHAMBER SAMPLING

NPL also carried out independent pumped sampling during the control period. No TBP was detected in the valid chamber-background sample within the reported detection limit.

TBP EXPOSURE

TBP Exposure

The first TBP introduction was made at 13:00, followed by further introductions at 13:06 and 13:11 from the same substrate. Further substrates were subsequently used to maximise the presence of TBP in the chamber.

All eight displayed sensor channels showed an immediate response to TBP.

INDEPENDENT CONFIRMATION

Independent NPL Confirmation

NPL simultaneously collected independent chamber samples during the TBP exposure test using industry-standard sorbent sampling.

Sampling ran from 12:57 to 13:54.

The exposed samples were subsequently analysed at NPL using automated thermal desorption with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS).

NPL TEST GRAPHIC

Sensor Response During TBP Exposure

Following TBP exposure, the sensor’s output began to change in real time, moving away from its stable baseline as the target compound was detected. The signal continued to develop over the exposure period before settling into a distinct response pattern. This real-time behaviour was later cross-checked against an independent laboratory method, confirming that the sensor’s response corresponded to genuine TBP detection rather than background variation.
